Ponyboy grudgingly changes his appearance to keep from being recognized. Why is he so reluctant to have his hair cut? How does his image change in both his own eyes and the eyes of others after his hair is cut and bleached?

He doesn’t want it cut because his hair is his identity. Cutting it would imply that he no longer belongs to the greasers
if he cut it he couldn’t be a greaser
