Bruno, the protagonist and the narrator. He is a 9 year old boy living in Berlin during WWII. His father, a Nazi officer, then moved the family to Auschwitz, Poland. Bruno is very sheltered, and though he developed a close friendship with Samuel, a Jewish boy in the concentration camp. Bruno had a hard time understanding how life was behind the fence. Despite everything going on in WWII, Bruno doesn’t fully understand and wishes to be like his father. Not understanding what is going on in the war, and the believing as he was taught that Germany was superior. Ultimately, Brunos lack of understanding leads to his death, his friendship with Shmuel leads him cross the fence to be killed in a gas chamber.
