A benefit of a multi-party system is that it can provide a wide variety of viewpoints added to the mix of government.
People have different opinons about many things. By having a multi-party system, people can align with the party that best matches with what they believe. It allows the voters to have their opinions expressed. In the United States, there are two big groups, democrats and republicans, and many smaller parties. Since the two parties tend to disagree on quite a few issues, it can make coming to a decision difficult. However, in the end there is usually some sort of compromise made that appeals to the majority (or at least gives each party a little of what they want).
