Mitosis and Meiosis-their differences and similarities

Similarities: both mitosis and meiosis are multistage processes. The stages are interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase. The same general processes occur in each of these stages for mitosis and meiosis. Interphase is cell growth and DNA replication in preparation for cell division

The similarities between mitosis and meiosis are as follows:

  • Both types of cell division take place in the nuclei of the cell.
  • Both involve some common stages like prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.
  • Both forms of cell division initiate from a diploid parental cell.
  • The occurrence of DNA synthesis happens in both sorts of cell divisions.

What is Meiosis?

Meiosis may be defined as the type of cell division that occurs in the germs cells of an individual. In this type of cell division, one parental cell produces four haploid daughter cells. It is also known as reductional division.

The differences between mitosis and meiosis are as follows:

  • Mitosis produces two daughter cells of diploid nature from a parental cell. These daughter cells are genetically identical to their parental cells.
  • Meiosis produces four daughter cells of haploid nature from a parental cell. These daughter cells are genetically different from their parental cell.
