It is given that :

Area of old crate = 8 square feet

Area of the new crate = 12 square feet

Therefore difference in the area = 12 - 8

                                                     = 4 square feet

Now the percentage increase in the area of the crate is given by :

$=\frac{\text{difference in the area of crate}}{\text{original area of crate}} \times 100$

$=\frac{4}{8} \times 100$

= 50%

So the percentage increase in space is 50%
