b = the y-intercept

You can make the first point at the y-intercept.

Next we use the slope to start plotting new points.

The slope is -3 which, in rise over run form, is [tex]\frac{-3}{1}[/tex]. Since -3 is negative we go down 3 units from the y-intercept and 1 to the right because it's positive. This makes a point at ( 1, -2 ). Then from that point go down 3 and 1 to the right again to get ( 2, -5 ).

We can continue using the slope to plot more points and then draw a continuous line through them to finish graphing the linear function.
