Is art an imitation or an interception of nature? I want to hear some opinions about this.

Interception-The action of explaining the meaning of something ​

I feel as thought it can be both. Some artist simply wish to capture the beauty of nature while others might see it in a more interpretive manner. What nature means or offers for them, maybe a sanctuary or something similar. I hope I'm not just rambling nonsense.
