let the 2 numbers be x and y.

x - 8 = y --(1)

5x = 2y - 8 --(2)

sub (1) into (2):

5x = 2(x - 8) - 8

5x = 2x - 24

3x = -24

x = -8

sub x = -8 into (1):

y = -8 - 8 = -16

first number is -8 and second number is -16.
