Corona virus disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 RNA virus that belongs to the betacoronavirus family. The corona virus has RNA as the genome.
Similarities between the DNA and RNA replication is:
- They both replicate to produce copies and to transfer the genome.
- Both the process requires DNA as a template.
- Bonds like phosphodiester is formed in both.
Viruses containing the RNA as the genome also replicate but not truly. They need the help of the host cell for the process of replication. Differences between the DNA and RNA replication are:
1. The corona virus has a positive-sense RNA strand that gets replicated with the help of RNA polymerase.
DNA is a double-stranded molecule that already has DNA as a template.
2. The RNA of the virus has a 5′ methylated cap and polyadenylated tail 3′ end. This acts as mRNA for the host cell and directly gets transcribed by ribosomes of the host cells.
DNA first gets replicated and then transcribes to form RNA.
3. The opening reading frames gets translated and poly proteins produce the non-structural proteins.
In DNA replication DNA gets formed which later gets translated to form proteins.
4. RNA dependent RNA polymerase the main replicase transcriptase directly replicates and transcripts the RNA strand.
DNA polymerase replicates the double helix.
5. RdRp directly synthesis the negative-sense strand of the genomic RNA.
DNA polymerase along with helicase, gyrase and ligase form the coding and the non-coding DNA strands.
6. From the negative-sense strand, the positive sense strand of genomic RNA is produced.
From the DNA another DNA strand is produced that has sense and anti-sense strands.
7. The replicated positive sense strand of the virus gets packaged in the protein capsules.
The replicated DNA further goes processing of transcription and translation.
