The first amendment gives you the right to practice whatever religion you want, gives you the freedom of speech, allows you to publish information freely, allows you to assemble in groups, and allows you to petition.
Examples:
I go to church every Sunday to worship Jesus.
^This is an example of freedom of religion. You are choosing to believe in Christianity; you are not be forced by the government to worship god.
I don’t like the celebrity ________. (enter name at blank)
^This is an example fo freedom of speech. You can say whatever you want to say (to a certain extent), and you wont be arrested for it.
I don’t like the Atlanta Hawks. I’m going to publish an article on why I don’t like them.
^This is an example of freedom of press. You are allowed to publish whatever you want (again, to a certain extent) and you wont be arrested for it.
I want to go to my best friend’s birthday party.
^This is an example of freedom of assembly. By going to a birthday party with many people, this is a group of people assembling.
I don’t like my city’s new rule, so I’m going to make a petition so we can change it.
^This is an example of freedom of petition. You are allowed to petition for something you don’t agree with.
