When light is absorbed, it gets converted into energy. Light will absorb green, but appear as red since those two forms have now combined. Take the process of photosynthesis for example, light is absorbed if the plants are complementary. If they are not, the process cannot occur. When something is complementary that means it can be combined. Another example would be how green light in chlorophyll isn't absorbed, it is reflected to show its color.
