Today almost all countries have soccer teams that hope to qualify for the world cup. Some sports did not become globalized and stayed in their countries of origin and are slowly spreading with the movement of people within the same regions such as cricket. Cricket has become a large sport in Asia and Africa but it has not diffused to large countries like America and Canada.

Popular culture hurts the environment as many popular cultures require investment and the construction of infrastructure or artificial designs. An example of an effect of popular culture is seen with golf.

Golf originated in Scotland, and due to hierarchical diffusion, the sport spread. The richer and more developed countries spread golf because of relocation diffusion to other countries like the U.S, many of these countries inherited golf.

However, this caused a major environmental issue, as golf took up a large amount of land, and diminished the resources like water. Golf courses account for 20% of water usage in Las Vegas. Folk cultures do not hurt the environment as some folk cultures place food taboos on certain things that may be vital to the environment like cattle and plants.
