In total there are 17 river basins in NC. Five of the state's river basins are part of the Mississippi River Basin which drains to the Gulf of Mexico. These five basins are: the Hiwassee, Little Tennessee, French Broad, Watagua and New. All the other ones flow to the Atlantic Ocean.
