The North wanted the new states to be “free states.” Most northerners thought that slavery was wrong and many northern states had outlawed slavery. The South, however, wanted the new states to be “slave states.” Cotton, rice, and tobacco were very hard on the southern soil.

The north was a very progressive area in contrast to the south at the time. The south kept pushing slavery as an attempt to keep getting income from the illegal work that was going on there. The north was much more city based while the south had a more country way of living.
