Napolean's army found the stone in July 15th, 1799 while digging the foundations of an addition to a fort near the town of Rashid (Rosetta) in the Nile delta. the officer in charge which was Pierre-Francois Bouchard realized how important the stone was and soon the stone was shipped to england and arrived in Portsmouth in February 1802.

Near the end of the 4th century AD people became less interested in deciphering the rosetta stone. Around the 19th century, some scholars figured out that they could use greek inscription that was on the stone to decipher the rosetta stone. Thomas young was the first to figure out a royal name which was Ptolemy.

One of the scholars named jean francois Champollion found out that the hieroglyphs recorded the sound of the egyptian language. Champollion made a big step for our understanding of the egyptians after he figured out some of the names of non-egyptian rulers. Chapollions roval, Thomas young, discovered what Champilloon had figured out when he announced it in a newspaper on friday september 27, 1822. Champollion also made a second discovery which actually drove him to figuring out a lot of the Rosetta stone in 1824, He figured out that the alphabetic signs were used not only for foreign names, but also for the egyptian language and names.
