Step 1. Add 7 to both sides.
[tex]5+7=4a[/tex]
Step 2. Simplify [tex]5+7[/tex] to [tex]12[/tex]
[tex]12=4a[/tex]
Step 3. Divide both sides by 4
[tex] \frac{12}{4} =a[/tex]
Step 4. Simplify [tex] \frac{12}{4} [/tex] to [tex]3[/tex]
[tex]3=a[/tex]
Step 5. Switch sides
[tex]a=3[/tex]
