John of Damascus, sometimes known as John Damascene, was a Christian apologist, hymn writer, and monk. Born and raised in Damascus around 675 or 676; the exact date and location of his passing are unknown, but tradition places it on 4 December 749 in his monastery, Mar Saba, close to Jerusalem.
