explain how using fraction strips with like denominators makes it possible to add fractions with unlike denominators.

Respuesta :

Because you don’t have to change the fractions so that they have equal denominators which you need in order to add fractions

Fraction strips uses (least)  common denominators, thus splitting big fraction into sum with like denominators and thus making addition possible.

Fraction strips require three major steps.

1. Firstly convert the problem with modelling as fraction strips.

2. Find the common denominator which should be least of all.

3. Now calculate the sum on new converted fractions.

For example:

[tex]\begin{aligned}\dfrac{1}{2} + \dfrac{3}{4} &= \dfrac{1}{4} + \dfrac{1}{4} + \dfrac{3}{4}\\&= \dfrac{2}{4} + \dfrac{3}{4}\\&= \dfrac{5}{4} = \: Ans.\end{aligned}[/tex]
