Theseus sets himself up to battle the Minotaur.
Since Theseus learnt that as a result of a curse over Athens seven of the city's sons and seven of its daughters were required to serve as Tributes to Crete. he was angry so that he volunteered to replace one of the young men, aiming at entering the Labyrinth and kill the beast.
Theseus was the mythical king and a hero who founded Athens. His role in history has been referes to as "a major cultural transition, like the making of the new Olympia by Hercules".
