Tom is standing on the bottom of a ladder 20ft away from the side of his house. The ladder is 50ft long, and the tip of the ladder is touching the bottom of his window. How far from the ground is the window?

Respuesta :

Distance from the bottom of a ladder to the side of house = 20 feet

Distance from the top of the ladder to the bottom of the window = 50 feet

Distance from the ground to the window =

As we can see a triangle is getting formed here .

The 20 feet side is this triangle's base and the 50 feet side is the leg on which it's right angle is present . This triangle is a right angle triangle . Since it is a right angle triangle let us find it's hypotenuse ( Distance from the ground to the window ) .

= Let us name the triangle as △ DFE .

In △ DFE :-

DF = 50 feet

FE = 20 feet

DE = DF² + FE² ( according to the pythagoras theorem which says that the square on the hypotenuse will be equal to the sum of squares on the other two legs )

= DF² + FE² = DE²

= 50² + 20² = DE²

= 2500 + 400 = DE²

= DE = 53.85 ( hypotenuse )

Therefore , his window is 53.85 feet from the ground .
