That’s a great question. It’s best understood when we realize that although a message has a clear beginning, known as the “sender,” that person is still receiving information from the receiver. Human communication is dynamic and simultaneous. We are both sender and receiver during communication events.
We have to remember that during human communication, we are constantly communicating through both vocal and physical components. Think of tone of voice, rate, pitch, facial expressions, gestures, touch, etc. These forms of feedforward and feedback are at play in every communication exchange. It is not just the words being exchanged that give meaning to the message.
