The 1860 Presidential Election in the United States saw Republican candidate Abraham Lincoln defeat challengers John C. Breckinridge, John Bell and Stephen Douglas. Lincoln's election was the immediate catalyst for the secession of seven southern states and the start of the American Civil War.
Because the federated states had more candidates they ended up splitting they’re voted which was a advantage for the Republican Party
