Many Southern Colonies were started for business reasons, but Maryland was founded for religious reasons. Maryland and other Southern Colonies had large tobacco plantations.
Maryland, unlike many other early colonies was very tolerant of different religious beliefs. They held what is commonly believed to be one of, if not the first, Catholic mass.
