What figure of speech is used in this line from Walt Whitman's poem "I Hear America Singing"? I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear

Respuesta :

I'd say its personification, because it says "i hear america singing." and america can't physically sing.

Answer:

It is clear to the speaker that the American identity is diverse yet cohesive. America shares a similar vision, but there are various means to that it. Although the speaker believes America is racially and ethnically diverse, he does not see it as one and the same. Instead of clinging to the old and boring white conformity that others would maintain, the speaker sees America as a cornucopia of varied carols that promote diversity.
