There are a number of ways you can change the volume of a gas.
Temperature: if you heat the gas it rises causing a change volume because the electrons gain more thermal energy BUT if you cool the gas down it sinks decreasing the molecules (the opposite effect)
Pressure can also change a gases volume. high pressure forces the molecules together creating a solid (along with cold temperatures)
