The First Battle of Bull Run was fought on July 21, 1861 in Virginia. This was the first major battle of the American Civil War. Although both sides were disorganized and poorly trained, the Confederacy managed to win. The many casualties and the fierce fighting surprised both sides. It made them realize that the war was going to be much longer and bloodier than expected. It also highlighted the poor training of both armies.
