phase 1) interphase, the DNA is copied and prepared for cell division
phase 2) prophase, the chromosomes condense into x shaped structures
phase 3) metaphase, the chromosomes line up end to end along the center of the cell
phase 4) anaphase, the chromatids are pulled apart by the mitotic spindle.
phase 5) telophase, a membrane forms around each set of chromosomes to form 2 new nuclei.
