Material Safety Data Sheet is an instruction sheet about chemical information, a guide from the user to be able to handle chemicals in the work environment
The main purpose of MSDS makes every user understand their safety and health when handling certain chemicals both on the field and in the laboratory
In each shipment of chemicals to the user, the MSDS should be included
In the MSDS there are a number of important points that are included including:
- 1. identity of material and supplier company
- 2. identification of hazards from materials includes: classification (irritant, corrosive etc.), identification labels / symbols
- 3. composition of materials (chemical properties: Strong acid/base, corrosive and hygroscopic, oxidizing agents, etc. and physical properties: Molecular weight, Density, Temperature etc., and concentration)
- 4. First aid action on an accident (medical action, important symptoms of an accident)
- 5. Fire or blasting measures (fire extinguishing media, possible hazards such as flammability etc., advice for firefighters)
- 6 Actions against spills / leaks (evacuation actions, emergency conditions, environmental protection, cleaning)
- 7. Storage and handling of materials (safe containers, environmental conditions in the container area, storage conditions)
- 8. Personal protective equipment (gloves, masks, helmets, shoes, glasses, face shields etc.)
- 9. Toxicological information (danger of inhalation, eye and skin irritation etc.)
- 10 Waste handling (disposal)
- 11. Transport of materials
Thus protection, control, management of hazardous materials can be planned, developed and implemented properly
By knowing MSDS, it is expected that there are no work accidents due to chemicals, so that events can be prevented / avoided and if they occur can be handled appropriately and quickly
