  • Now, if you have a rectangle whose  width is x and whose length is 3x, the perimeter must be  3x + 3x + x + x = 8x.  
  • You are told that the perimeter is 26, so the equation is 8x = 26.  
  • Dividing both sides by 8, one gets x = 3.25.  So the width is 3.25 and the  length is 6.5.
