Having been deserted or cast of is the definition of abandoned
Think about a group of people living on an island. If everyone living on the island decided to sail away to find a new home. Then the island could now be described as abandoned, because it is being DESERTED by the people who were previously living on the island.
Another example would be if someone was having trouble with something but decided to CAST OFF the problem entirely or abandon the problem.
