After getting independence from Britain, America adopted slavery as they were engaged in plantations of cotton, rice, tobacco etc. The debate and compromise of 1820 over slavery prevented conflict because of the equal balance of power in Congress between slave and non-slave states. Later, it proved to be impossible because both the North and the South had different ideas about slavery. The South wanted slavery as legal while the North wanted it to abolished.
