Deng Xiaoping basically opened China up for foreingners, and promoted international trade. Before, China was "locked up" to foreign countries for different reasons. During the Qing Dynasty, following the fall of European Monachies and the rise of democracy, the Qing was very hesitant to foreigners to enter the country, as they were afraid they would also be kicked off the throne. This was even more important to the Qing, as they were of Manchu descent, not of the original Han, so they were very threathened to revolts. There were already many revolts during the Qing Dynasty, the most notable being the Taiping revolution, and the Xinhai revoltuion (which eventually overthrew the Qing). During Mao, the ideology in the country was Communism and Mao didn't want Westerners to give new ideas to the people. Mao has already cracked down on many more educated people in then China, such as the pricipal of Qinghua University, one of China's most presigious universities. It was Deng Xiaoping that opened China up and laid the foundation to what it is today.
