I. King Jordan was the first deaf president of Gallaudet University in 1988. The Gallaudet University is the world's only University which have programs designed specifically for hearing impaired students (deaf students).

The students of the university protested Board of Trustees' appointment of a hearing person to the presidency in support of the alumni. The protest was named Deaf President Now (DPN).

Therefore, I. King Jordan was named the first deaf president and of the university and eighth president since the establishment of the university.
