The ions are transported by Active Transport.
The movement of ions requires membrane proteins to transfer ions from a region to another. Transport of ions from their lower concentration to a region of their higher concentration (against the concentration gradient) is called as Active Transport, which requires energy.
Thus, the process enables the supply of ions from soil to roots of the plant, for the steady synthesis of chlorophyll is active transport as the concentration of ion is higher in the roots oft the plant as compared to soil.
