In 1936, the Farm Security Administration, a branch of the Department of Agriculture, built thirteen migrant camps in California. While these were not nearly enough, given the number of migrants, such emergency shelters relieved a great deal of suffering. The agency built its first camp, called Weedpatch, just south of the city of Bakersfield in the San Joaquin Valley. Used as a model for the others, Weedpatch provided clean water, showers, toilets, and food. Migrants lived in canvas tents and one-room cabins.
