It is caused by plasmodium parasites. Five species of plasmodium are known to cause malaria out of which P. vivax and P. falciparum are most dangerous.
However, the parasite needs a vector to infect humans. In this case, the role of the vector is played by female Anopheles mosquito.
Its bite is responsible for transmission of malaria to humans.
