The irony of this story is that Dickie and his mother live in a suppressive environment and are bound not to learn things about the government. But, Dickie has an inquisitive nature and shows great eager in learning new things.

  • Mr Jordan senses his interests hence he acts very rash with him. There is no proper explanation as to why a twelve-year-old want to take the truth serum and take a test designed by the government.  

  • This story is narrated by a third person and shows themes of fear, control and liberty.

Irony is a figurative expression that is used by a speaker to show the opposite of what he truly means. This is usually done for humorous or satirical effect.
