I think the DC Booth Fish Hatchery matters because it helps people learn about different

histories. They are helping different types of fish grow so they can stock other water bodies. The DC

Booth Fish Hatchery is a large scale aquarium that is open every day from 9AM to 6PM. They also

have duck ponds with ducks to feed. To get food for the ducks you can either ask whoever’s running

the front stand or get some from the machines. You can get a bag for $1! They also have some

wildlife viewing you can do. You can also mountain bike, hike, or walk! My family always hikes! You

can prearrange a tour or have a self guided one. My family always takes self guided tours!

I think it should be preserved because it is a historical site that was established in 1896. Also because

in my lifetime I’ve been there pretty close to 100 times. My favorite thing there is the duck ponds

because I love to see the ducks race around to get food. The duck ponds are also fun because in the

spring time3 all the ducklings race around while playing! I also like the pond with both ducks and fish.

I also like to have a picnic while watching the ducks play. If you would like to go to the DEC Booth

Fish Hatchery then go to 423 Hatchery Circle in Spearfish. When I was little we used to live 15

minutes from Spearfish and would spend most of our time at the fish hatchery. We would have lots

and lots of picnics.

The fish hatchery has special events throughout the year. For example, there is the South

Dakota Junior Duck Stamp contest and May 16th is Booth Day. They also have historic buildings that

people will give you tours of, such as the Booth House, Von Bayer Museum, and fisheries rail cars.

The tours are super fun and stunning. My family has taken the tour a few times. These are a few reasons why I think the DC Booth Fish Hatchery is an important place in

South Dakota’s history.
