Eliezer’s father was one of the opinion that it was never good to volunteer for anything within the camp it was better to blend than to be noticed within the confines of the wire. Was this a good strategy for Eliezer and his father why or why not?
Elie wanted to always "stay safe" by never doing anything that brought attention to him or his father, or make them stick out in the crowd. This would make it easier for the Nazis to punish them if they did something wrong.
