Describe one way the human respiratory system degrades over our lifespans, and explain one environmental condition that could cause an unnatural degradation as someone ages, including why that environmental condition harms their respiratory system. Describe how both natural aging or environmental harm can make people more susceptible to disease, explaining the link between the damage and the disease.

Explanation:

As human age, their respiratory system also ages making gaseous exchange less and less effective. With age the bone and muscular strenght of tissues that keep the respiratory tract open lessen and it becomes the tract slowly collapses. The alveoli also age and become baggy losing their shape. The dead space between alveoli also increases.

This is accelerated by some environmental conditions such as air pollution and smoking. When particulate matter settles in the lungs and alveoli, it causes accelerate damage to the lung tissues and scarring. This is why people in chronically polluted areas, generally speaking, live less longer than people in cleaner environments especially due to respiratory problems they develop.

With age the tissues and bones supporting the respiratory system get weak and even some of the environmental conditions like air pollution are resulting in the degradation of respiratory system.

Degradation of human respiratory system:

In humans with age, the aging of respiratory system also takes place, which makes exchange of gases less effective. Even with age, the muscular strength of tissues and bones, which maintain the respiratory tract open less and collapses or closes the tract gradually. With age, the alveoli also become baggy and lose their shape. The space between the alveoli increases known as dead space.

However, apart from age, some of the environmental factors like smoking and air pollution are also degrading the respiratory system of humans. With the increase in air pollution, the particular matter get settled in the alveoli and lungs, it results in the destruction and scarring of the lung tissues. This is the reason that the population living in polluted regions live less in comparison to people living in pollution free regions.

Thus, both age and environmental factors degrades respiratory system in humans.
