Justinian, the future Byzantine emperor, was brought to the Byzantine court by his uncle Justin I, who appointed him in important offices and gave him access  to circle of powers. After his death, the newphew became Justinian I. He is one of the most important Byzantines rulers of history.

He recovered the territories lost by the extinct Western Roman Empire, won more territories in Asia and defended the empire against Persian ambitions. He was married to  Theodora, who exerted great influence on him.  She enjoyed considerable power.

Together, they promoted a large and significant codification of Byzantine and followed a policy of construction and public works. Justinian I built the famous cathedral Hagia Sophia.
