During the Civil war, the Federalism was more of a necessity than choice. It was thought as better weapon to expand the North into the south. After that the concept of division of power between Centre and States led to the evolution of Federalism to Dual federalism.

Dual Federalism gives enough power to states to work independently of Centre as defined in the 10th Amendment. But the weak centre and strong federal states led to the Great Depression.

Again the event of Great Depression changed the feature of Federalism from Dual federalism, to strong Centre and weak States. This also helped US to overcome the Great Depression.

And by 1970 it shifted from strong centre to cooperative federalism where specific role was assigned to the Centre and States.
