They split into 2 branches: Sunni and Shia due to beliefs of whether prophet Muhammad pbuh had a leader or not. Shias believe in his cousin Imam Ali and that god chose him to be Muhammad’s successor. Sunnis believe that prophet Muhammad had no rightful heir, therefore had the idea that a religious leader should be elected by the people.
