The assortment of genes in the gametes is determined by metaphase 1 and metaphase 2.
It should be noted that independent assortment has to do with how different genes separate from each other when there's a development of reproductive cells.
The independent assortment in meiosis occurs in both metaphase 1 and metaphase 2. This is where there the chromosomes line up before they're later divided. The chromosomes are divided into half in order to form haploid cells.
