: Political reform movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to protect working class citizens. Reformers wanted the government to become more active in handling the ills that existed in society. Progressives wanted the government to regulate meat companies, pass laws to eliminate child labor, establish a minimum wage, instead of practicing laissez-faire hands off approach to governing established by Adam Smith in the Wealth of Nations.
