A photon of light produced by a surgical laser has an energy of 3.027 × 10−19 J. Calculate the frequency and wavelength of the photon. What is the total energy in 1 mole of photons? What is the color of the emitted light?

Explanation:

(1)

Well use the Planck’s equation to find the frequency of the laser;

E = hν  where;

E = energy

h = Planck's constant = 6.626 x 10-34 J·s

ν = frequency

3.027 × 10−19 = 6.626 x 10-34v

v = 3.027 × 10−19/6.626 x 10-34

v = 4.57 x 10^14

To find wavelength;

v  =c / λ where;

c = speed of light = 3 x 10^8 m/sec

4.57 x 10^14 = 3 x 10^8 / λ

λ = 3 x 10^8/4.57 x 10^14

= 6.56 x 10^-7 m

(2)

1 mole of photons is made up of 6.02 x 10^23 photons. Therefore the total energy in 1 mole of the photons is;

3.027 × 10−19 * 6.02 x 10^23

= 1.822 x 10^5 J

(3)

Based on the wavelength of the laser which is 6.56 x 10^-7 m, the color of the laser is RED. The red light of the visible electromagnetic spectrum ranges between 6.25 x 10^-7 - 7.00 x 10^-7 m
