The Zapotec people were among the most developed in the Americas and persisting for such a long time as a civilization is a good proof of it. Throughout the centuries and millenniums the Zapotec were in contact with the other civilizations in the region, so they managed to exchange lot of ideas and technology that benefit them a lot.

Because this civilization was thriving the population was growing more and more. Larger population means that more food is needed. In order to satisfy the needs the Zapotec started to perform terrace farming, as the mountain slopes were the only place left int heir territory for agricultural expansion.
