Homeothermic animals are those that are capable of maintain a relatively constant body temperature irrespective of the environmental temperature while poikilothermic animals are those whose body temperature varies along with the temperature of the environment.

Homeothermic/poikilothermic animals function either by generating their own body heat (endothermic), or by extracting heat from the environment to maintain this constant body temperature (exothermic).

Homeothermic endotherms include most birds and mammals along with some fishes.

Homeothermic ectotherms include organisms in deep lake or oceans including tropical reptiles.

Poikilothermic endotherms include some birds and mammals, several insects and some invertebrates.

Poikilothermic ectotherms include most invertebrates, fishes, amphibians and reptiles.
