You can tell by the way Buck talks about getting lashed that a dog must learn what his job is during the ride. The whips are used for dog sled racing today to help with training team dogs.  Jack London also included all the fights that happened between the sled dogs. An article from The Baltimore Sun describes what happened to a musher when his sled dogs started fighting causing him injury when he tried to break them up. Even though Jack London is right about how dogs are used in mushing, the motivations of the dogs are made up. Dogs that are parts of mushing teams do not have the deep thoughts that London explains in the book. The dogs are trained to do their jobs on the mushing team and once they learn how to mush, they do it without much thought. The physical explaination of dog mushing in Call of the Wild is accurate but the social drama explained is not real.
