Jack is renting a boat to go fishing with his friends. One rental company charges a fee of $20 plus $13.50 an hour. A second rental company charges a fee of $6 plus $17 an hour. Let x represent the number of hours the boat is rented and y represent the total cost of the rental. Write a system of equations to represent the problem situation. When is the cost of each rental company the same? Explain how you got your answer.

Respuesta :

Answer:

Costs y1 and y2 are equal on renting for 4 hours

Step-by-step explanation:

The cost of each rental company is the same after 4 years.

What are linear equations?

An Equation between two variables are called as linear equations.

It is given that x represents number of hours the boat is rented

and y represents total cost of the rental.

Now, for the First rental comany, total charges y = 20 + 13.5x

and, for the Second rental company, total charges, y = 6 + 17x

⇒ For both the cost of each rental company to be same,

cost of First rental company =  cost of Second rental company

⇒ 20 + 13x = 6 + 17x

⇒ 20 - 6 =  17x - 13.5x

⇒ 3.5x = 14

⇒ x = 14/3.5

x =  4 years

The cost of each rental company is the same after 4 years.
